Deseret Power's Bonanza Generating Station

Site: Deseret Power’s Bonanza Generating Station

Location: Vernal, Utah

Specs: Deseret Power is a member-owned, regional electrical cooperative providing power to over 40,000 people in six member systems throughout Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Nevada and Arizona. Deseret’s Bonanza Generating Station is ranked among the cleanest, highest-capacity and environmentally safe coal-fired power plants in the world. It is a 485 MWg coal-fired unit with a 99.945% net capacity factor. The Foster Wheeler boiler has five pulverizers in an opposed firing arrangement, it is controlled by a Foxboro DCS, and is equipped with a 30 point CO grid, an ASI soot blowing system and burners with low-NOx nozzles.

Site Goal(s): Deseret’s ultimate goal is to achieve greater financial flexibility for its members and customers by gaining more control over its operations. In May 2000, three B&V 89G+ mills were added so Bonanza could burn lower quality coal while maintaining the same rated steam flow. Since the EPA’s New Source Review (NSR) limits were baselined on the NOx production at the plant during the previous five years rather than permitted limits, it was critical that Bonanza maintain their low NOx emissions levels to avoid NSR. This was becoming more and more difficult with decreasing coal quality, and equipment limits were being pushed. The site needed to find a solution to help with NOx control while having a positive impact on unit efficiency, availability and capacity.

Project Overview: Deseret contracted with NeuCo for a project that combined the application of CombustionOpt, PerformanceOpt and FGD-Opt, with the UnitAdvisor decision support infrastructure. The project started with the implementation of CombustionOpt, which is now completed and showing significant NOx, boiler efficiency and CO results. The implementation of PerformanceOpt and FGD-Opt are now underway. Check the papers and presentations section for updated project information.
